Controversial Issues in America - Is There Any Value to That? There are many controversial issues in America, but none of them are more misunderstood than the issue of whether or not to allow Muslim immigration into the United States. In a country that prides itself on its diversity, it is clear that some people would like to see an end to the immigration of Muslim immigrants. Is there any merit to these concerns?
There are several issues that people in the United States have about Muslim immigration that seem rather petty. The first is the idea that Muslim immigration is antithetical to American values. Yet, the truth is that Muslims have been assimilating into American society for years.
As a nation that has a complicated relationship with religion, it is important to consider the fact that many Muslim immigrants are largely supportive of the idea of their faith. Many people have a complex relationship with religion, but this seems rather counterproductive to suggest that they would not be tolerant of others within their faith.
Some people believe that because of the threat of terrorism, people should restrict the Muslim population. This is simply a straw man argument that is never argued by anyone who actually believes in freedom of religion. There is no evidence to suggest that Muslim immigrants pose a threat to the security of our nation.
The only people who argue against Muslim immigration are those who are living under the impression that this is an issue about religion. Yet, it is essential to remember that our founding fathers wrote into the US Constitution the separation of church and state, meaning that it is our job to guard against any encroachment on this freedom.
The real issues with controversial issues in America revolve around race. So much of what we discuss in the media and in political rhetoric tends to refer to how African Americans or Hispanic Americans are struggling to make ends meet.
Though there is an issue with immigration from all over the world, the fact remains that it is not only Latinos that have multiple cultural backgrounds. It is time that the American people addressed the true issues that exist in our society, rather than allowing the media to spin every issue to fit their own political agenda.
